What are Dental Implants?
When a tooth is missing or must be extracted, normal restorations can fill the gap, but only on the surface. Unfortunately, when tooth loss occurs, it doesn’t just affect your oral structure above the gum line.
Without a root, the jawbone begins to experience accelerated resorption, a process where the jaw loses bone mass without the stimulation provided by the root. Dental implants prevent this by acting as a new root, stimulating the jaw just as a natural tooth root would.
A biocompatible post is placed directly into the bone, which bonds to the bone over the course of healing, in a process known as osseointegration. Once the bonding is complete, a beautiful prosthetic is placed using an abutment onto the implant post.
Not only do implant-supported restorations look and feel just like a real tooth, but they return full strength to the bite and prevent teeth from shifting out of alignment due to missing dentition.
Are Dental Implants Right for Me?
There are a number of things to keep in mind before considering dental implants to restore your smile, as there a few important qualifications that a patient must meet in order to ensure a successful implant.
For starters, bone density matters. Dental implants are fairly small, but if there’s not enough bone to support the implant, it could fail. Even worse, the implant could cause more damage to bones that are too brittle.
For patients that lack the necessary bone density, however, there are other options. Bone grafts can prepare the jaw for implant surgery.
It is also crucial that the mouth and full oral system be in good health. If the mouth and gums are not healthy, it is unlikely that the implant will properly heal or be successful.
